How to get to Las Terrenas ?

Flights to Las Terrenas

SAMANA – El Catey (AZS) – distance 20 minutes :
The closest airport from Las Terrenas where you can find direct flights from Toronto ( YYZ ), Montreal (YUL), Ottawa (YOW), Quebec City (YQB) and Paris (ORY). Flights to Las Terrenas Samana El Catey are sparse and not always the best option.

 

SANTO DOMINGO – Las Americas ( SDQ ) – distance 2h30 :
The easiest way is to fly to Santo Domingo, the biggest closest airport to Las Terrenas with many more flight connections than in Samana El Catey.

  • For American you can find direct fly from : Miami FL (MIA), New York (JFK), Newark (EWR), Atlanta (ATL).
  • For European you can find direct fly from : Paris (CDG), Paris Orly (ORY), Francfort (FRA), Bruxelles (BRU), Madrid (MAD), London (LHR)

PUNTA CANA – Punta Cana international airport ( PUJ ) – distance 5h :

It’s not the closest airport to Las Terrenas, but it’s the biggest one where you’ll usually be able to find cheaper tickets with better connexion from everywhere ! The only problem is to reach Las Terrenas after because you need to take 2 bus loosing one day travelling. Private transfers are very expensive so better to rent a car for the same price.

Rental car to Las Terrenas

It’s always a big headache to get a rental car at the airport where all the companies try to screw you even if you booked online !!!

Most of them with big names that you know, will charge you additional costs for insurance, give you a different car (sometime nothing) and the waiting time is horrible because this is Dominican Republic rules.

Please don’t drive by night due to the high light or no light vehicle going sometime wrong way …

Local bus to Las Terrenas

  • From Santo Domingo airport: distance 2h30
    First take a cab for a 10 minutes ride to the bus stop « Parada Samana » with a cost of 10 usd.
    Then go to the company «Transporte Las Terrenas» where you ask for the direct bus only destination Las Terrenas (watch out, there are others going to Samana or Sanchez !)

    Timetable : 8:50 am – 9:50 am – 11:20 am – 2 pm – 3:20 pm – 6:20 pm
    Cost : 10 usd
  • From Punta Cana airport: distance 5h
    There isn’t a direct bus, you’ll need to change near Santo Domingo airport. To get to the bus stop, take a cab from Punta Cana airport to the bus stop «Cruce de Veron» with a cost of 15 usd. The company operating this bus line is «Espresso Bavaro», always fully booked so you need to buy your ticket 30 min before.

    Timetable : 7 am – 9 am – 11 am – 1 pm – 3 pm – 4 pm

    Get out of the bus before Santo Domingo city, at the bus station «Parada Samana» the next one after «Las Americas airport» where you stop in the middle of the highway and cross it to reach «Transporte Las Terrenas».

FAQ

You will need a minimum of 3 hours of lessons to start. You will master 3 essential skills: piloting the kite on land, body dragging in deep water without the board, and water-start. It is recommended to do take the 6-hour package across 3 days so that you can become an independent kiteboarder with the kite control needed for every situation.

The Dominican Republic has wind almost all year round. The best months are February, March, April, June, July, and August. The best time for surfing in the Dominican Republic is from November until April along the North shore of the island.

Cabarete: 200 kites in the air; 15 kite schools; choppy and big shore break difficult for students; strong winds between 20 – 30 knots; perfect for waves riders; not many flight connections from Puerto Plata airport.

Las Terrenas: Uncrowded spot; flat and shallow crystal clear water; perfect for beginners, freestyle coaching and hydrofoil lessons; many flight options from Santo Domingo airport. There are also many other things to do such as whale watching, visit El Limon Waterfall, or Los Haitises national park. Just ask for details

No worries the wind speed is always between 15 & 20 knots and super steady like a fan! Unfortunately, Windguru doesn’t take into account the local thermal wind which reinforces the steady trade winds «Alizes». It is best to add 5 knots to the forecast.

Yes! Don’t forget that the principal economy of the island has been tourism for the last 20 years. The Dominican people will take the best care of you and make sure you spread the word about this beautiful place.

You need nothing other than the common travel vaccinations! You must be careful with the sun and make sure you have adequate protective clothing: rashguard, hat, sunglasses, sunblock …. The mosquitos tend to come out at the beginning/ending of the day.

The national currency is the Dominican pesos ( DOP ) but you can exchange US Dollars & Euros everywhere (be warned airport rates are the worst ! ). Credit cards are not accepted in most small Dominican shops, but are welcome in hotels, and many restaurant & activities. ATM fees are normally $5 for each withdraw at the machine in addition to your bank charges!

The answer is NO! It’s a small village where you are 30 minutes walking distance to anything. If you want to discover the uncrowded beaches nearby, then it is better to rent a scooter or an ATV.

No wetsuit, no shoes only your board shorts!
Kitesurf: winter time you’ll need a 14 m & 12 m and in the summertime a 12m & 9 m kite quiver.
Wingfoil: board volume between 60l & 90l, foil size around 1000cm, wing sail 6m & 4.5m.

Wingfoiling is a water sport where a rider stands on a board with a hydrofoil (a big single fin that lifts the board above the water) and holds a handheld inflatable wing. Wind powers the wing to propel the rider across the water.

Windsurfing uses a sail attached to a mast and board.
Kiteboarding uses a kite connected by lines and a harness.
Wingfoiling uses a wing (no lines and no harness), making it more compact, simple, and portable.

No prior experience is required. Many start with a lesson on a non-foiling board before moving to a foil board.

Ideal starting wind: 10–20 knots (11–23 mph / 18–37 km/h).

Most people can get up and riding on flat water in 3–5 sessions.
Learning to foil consistently and ride upwind takes longer (approx. 10–15 sessions).
A lesson with a certified instructor can dramatically speed up learning.

You can wingfoil anywhere with enough wind and open water like lakes, rivers into cities and narrow spot where kitesurf is unsafe. Avoid areas with strong currents, boat traffic, or shallow water (foil needs depth).

Wingfoiling is often easier to start due to its simple setup and lower risk. However, learning to ride the foil can take time.

Kitesurfing has a steeper learning curve early on but can offer faster progression once you’ve mastered kite control.

Wingfoiling is generally considered safer because it doesn’t involve lines, high speeds, or harnesses.

Kitesurfing can be more dangerous in strong wind or crowded areas due to the power and size of the kite.
